Foods high in refined carbohydrates and added sugars are generally best to avoid or limit on a low-carb diet, as they can lead to rapid blood sugar spikes and offer little nutritional value. These include sugary drinks, white bread, white rice, pasta, pastries, and sugary cereals.
Reduce the intake of white sugar, brown sugar, coconut sugar, palm sugar, and high-fructose corn syrup. These sugars may come from plants, but they have been processed in some way to create a simple, sweet form. Candies, cakes, cookies, pastries, sweet sodas and juices contain refined sugars and should only be enjoyed in moderation.
Don't be fooled by "sugar free" labels! It's not as healthy as you think. Some artificial sweeteners are approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as food additives like saccharin, aspartame, acesulfame potassium (acesulfame-K, or Ace-K), sucralose, neotame, and advantame. Common foods containing artificial sweeteners are sugar free sodas, juices and candy and table top packets like Sweet N Low, Equal and Splenda.
It's hard to avoid processed food all together, unless you own a farm. We want to reduce the intake of heavy processed food like french fries, candy, store-bought cookies, soft drinks, refined grain pretzels, commercial bread, sweetened breakfast cereals, etc. Fast food is typically ultra processed and should be avoided as much as possible.
